Clubs

Builder's Club
The Golden Kiwanis Club of Danville sponsors the Builder’s Club at North Ridge Middle School. The club’s purpose is to serve the community and school in various types of service projects. Some of these projects include: assisting with the Kiwanis Pancake Day, recycling, and ringing bells at Christmas-time for the Salvation Army. The actual time involved depends upon the project. The club meets from September-May, once or twice a month, on Wednesday mornings. There is a small annual membership fee required to join. Students receive membership pins and cards from Kiwanis International. All grade levels can participate.

Computer Club
This club is for students who enjoy learning about computers, software programs, the internet and web pages. All grade levels can participate.

Concert Orchestra
North Ridge Concert Orchestra is a group of 7th and 8th grade students who perform for civic groups, nursing homes, school assemblies, and clubs during the school day. The Orchestra also prepares music for concerts, solo and ensemble contests, as well as competitions. Every other year the Orchestra will participate in a national competition, often held out of state. The activity goes on throughout the entire school year and students are expected to attend all scheduled events as this is an important part of their class grading procedure.

Drama Club
Drama Club is open to all North Ridge students. The size of the play’s cast does cause some limitations on student involvement. Students can be involved in any aspect of production: acting, set construction, lights, costumes, etc. Drama Club meets during productions. Practices are after school from 3:00-5:00 p.m., 3-4 nights a week and in evenings during show week. Anyone can join, but you must audition for roles in the plays.

Jazz Band I/REDPEPPERS
The North Ridge “REDPEPPERS” jazz band is an extracurricular activity. Tryouts for next year’s group are held at the beginning of each school year. The group rehearses Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays at 7:45am. Since the jazz group is an extracurricular activity, each member must maintain their classroom grades and studies. Extended periods on the ineligibility list can cause one to be dropped from the group. The REDPEPPERS perform at many in-school and out-of-school events each semester including contests and public performances both during and out-of-school hours. The group usually travels to an out-of state festival every other year. Members of the REDPEPPERS must be members of the North Ridge band. Students who audition for the jazz band as bass, guitar, or piano players must be in band, choir or orchestra.

National Junior Honor Society
National Junior Honor Society is an all year activity open to 7th and 8th grade students by invitation. The purpose of this chapter shall be to create enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote leadership, to develop character, and to encourage good citizenship in students of North Ridge Middle School. Participants in NJHS are required to complete 7 hours (1st year) or 10 hours (2nd year) of community service. Students are selected for membership by the procedure listed below.

Selection Procedure for National Junior Honor Society
1) As and Bs must be maintained.
2) All students who are eligible scholastically (i.e., candidates) shall be notified and asked to complete and submit an application, including a personal essay, for further consideration.
3) The faculty shall be requested to evaluate candidates determined to be scholastically eligible using the official input form.
4) The faculty council shall review the applications, faculty input, student essay, and other relevant information to determine those who fully meet the selection criteria for membership.

NRMS Junior Rho Kappa National Social Studies Honor Society
The North Ridge Middle School chapter of the National Social Studies Honor Society, or Junior Rho Kappa, is an exclusive 8th grade student organization dedicated to promoting the social studies and recognizing students for their excellence in the field. North Ridge Junior Rho Kappa is committed to student excellence through leadership, service, education, and advocacy within District 118 and the larger Danville community.

Students can qualify for Junior Rho Kappa through a recommendation by their 7th grade Social Studies teacher. In order for students to be recommended, they must fulfill the following:

1. The student must have been in attendance at North Ridge for one semester prior to consideration.
2. The student must have completed two semesters of 7th grade Social Studies.
3. The student must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.00.

Once a month, the members of our chapter will meet in Mr. Edward Baer’s classroom to review upcoming activities and reflect on tasks accomplished. For example, there will be several events throughout the school year where students will be required to participate and engage in our school community.

Operetta
Each year a new show will be performed. The rehearsals are after school. This is an activity that requires an audition for a speaking/singing part and may require you to dance. All students are allowed to audition for the show.

Radiant Reds
Radiant Reds is an all girls show choir (singing plus movement) choreographed by a professional. We perform at various civic organizations, clubs, nursing homes, and participate in many contests in the Midwest. All North Ridge girls may audition. Auditions are held in May. Students will be asked to purchase a costume and pay for travel to and from some events.

Redcoats
Redcoats is a show choir (singing plus movement) choreographed by a professional. We perform at various civic organizations, clubs, nursing homes, and participate in many contests in the Midwest. We meet during the entire school year on Tuesday evenings from 6:00-8:30 p.m. This is an audition only group. All North Ridge students may audition. Auditions are held in May. Students will be asked to purchase a costume and pay for travel to and from some events.

Ridgerunner Yearbook
The North Ridge yearbook is an exciting activity that stresses responsibility and dependability. Members take photos and help design the pages. Also, members will make cover and theme decisions. Cooperation and working as a team is stressed. This activity runs from September to May when the books are distributed. Meetings are held September through May; a schedule will be provided to each member. Students of all grade levels may participate. Ten students from each grade level will be selected to participate.

Spelling Team
The spelling team meets during the months of November-February. Students try out by taking a written test. Students study a list of spelling words (approximately 2500) and spell in 2 competitions, city and county.

Student Council
This activity goes on all during the school year. The members are elected in September by the student body and are from all grade levels. One student represents each homeroom during the school year. We meet on early out Wednesdays at 8:05am. We help raise money for North Ridge through activities such as dances and fundraisers. We support our community by collecting money for our library, Toys for Tots, etc. The members also bring concerns and ideas from other students for improvements to our school.

Titan School Newspaper
This group meets from October to April. Members will help create original articles, interview people, write and edit columns. They will also help type articles and sell printed editions to students during lunch times. All members will also be encouraged to help with the art portion of the Titan, creating drawings and sketching ideas for pictures and covers related to the theme for the issue. We welcome all grade levels of students with creative interests to participate.
